Grandma’s Cut Out Cookies

I just went to the store and got all the food I need for Christmas. So now it’s time for me to make cookies. This recipe for cut out cookies was my maternal grandmother’s. She found it in a magazine and it is the recipe I grew up with. When I was in high school, we made cut out cookies and I was horrified by the sugar cookies we made. My family’s cookies were so much better. So before I go in the kitchen and make a huge mess let me share the recipe. Be forewarned my mother was one of 5 children with lots of friends so this recipe is best halved or quartered, unless you want to make cookies on an industrial scale.

2 C. butter

2 C sugar

1 C brown sugar

1 tsp vanilla

¼ C milk

4 eggs

6 ½ C flour

3 tsp cream of tartar

2 tsp baking soda

Cream the butter and sugar together

Mix in the vanilla, milk, and eggs

Sift in the flour, cream of tartar, and baking soda.

Let the cookie dough chill.

When the dough is properly chilled preheat the oven to 375 F

Roll out the dough and cut into shapes

Decorate with sprinkles and coloured sugar before baking if not using frosting

Bake for 10-15 min

If frosting wait until the cookies are cool and smother with frosting
